First of all, this site is designed for modern browsers.  If you're a Mac user, you'll see my site the way I mean it to be; if you're a PC user and using IE8 or lower then, thanks to the arrogance of Microsoft Corporation, the pages will appear somewhat bland.  However, if you're an intelligent PC user with a decent browser (Firefox, Chrome etc. [or IE9 if your OS is Windows Vista or 7]), my pages will (I think) render a little more aesthetically pleasing.  Whatever!  Either way, you will have noticed that I'm not 'arty'; but at least the 'div's' have rounded corners (in all but IE8 or lower) with no table or gif in sight, hence all achieved with CSS.  So I urge all you IE8 users, go and get a decent browser - your whole web experience will be so much better.

Secondly, I absolutely hate the new trend of 'white' web sites - e.g., the BBC and Radio Times.  No!  I'm not going to 'link' to such, presentational unattractive sites - go find them for yourself.  Whilst I'm not in the slightest bit 'arty', at least I make some effort to make my pages a little more agreeable (reference previous paragraph) - unlike the idiots who sanctioned, and those who subsequently 'developed', the sites previously mentioned.  After all, how much effort does it take to produce no theme? (The Emperor's' New Clothes perhaps!)

But I digress.  Please bear with me.  This site is very much a 'work in progress' - I've not yet produced pages for all the topics listed below.  And those that are 'linked' to are not necessarily finished!

Anyway, here you will find the ramblings of a grumpy old git who is disillusioned with contemporary western society.  I know that each generation tends to despair of the next, but it's not just the younger generation (relative to me) of which I despair, it's as much the ones in between - bloody 1960's!

I've made every effort to avoid using 'bad language' in my pages - although, not using swear words has, at times, really made me stop and think how to create a sentence (you wouldn't believe it, would you?).  I can 'f' & 'blind' with the best of them - but I don't in the presence of women & children.  My (now adult) children use words in my presence that I would never have uttered in the presence my parents!  Is it just a case of 'times change' or have moral values declined?

I'm not a philosopher, nor am I an expert in any one of my topics listed below.  Furthermore, one great concern I have is that the more I ponder how to express my thoughts, I keep getting a nagging notion that readers of my pages will think I'm some sort of right-wing, fascist, queer-bashing, BNP, supporter.  Not so, I'm most definitely not, but then I'm no liberal either.  If I were to describe myself, I would say that I'm a free-thinking, open-minded, caring conservative; having been raised with Christian values (of the Church of England variety) and have tried to live my life by them, I just have, what I consider to be, 'traditional' values.  I'm no 'leader of men', but I don't just blindly 'go with the flow' - I'm no sheep either!

This web site is not designed to offend anyone.  Nor is there any intention to incite any form of phobia or violence against any particular group or opinion.  It's just one individual (me, Tim Silver) taking the opportunity of the wonderful WWW to express my thoughts (and fears).  You, the reader, will no doubt find many contradictions in my various deliberations, but maybe that's because we, as a society, shy away from having open & honest discussions regarding these subjects.

Anyway, if you're still reading my 'therapy', here is a list (it's purely alphabetical) of just a few of the topics on which I have an opinion:

  • Ageing - why do we want to live longer?
